AGRICULTURAL ORIGINS AND CULINARY CULTURES IN ACERAMIC NEOLITHIC SOUTHEAST ANATOLIA: RECENT ARCHAEOBOTANICAL EVIDENCE FROM THE TAŞ TEPELER PROJECT
Our next evening lecture takes us to Pre-Pottery Neolithic sites in Southeast Anatolia. We are delighted to welcome Dr. Ceren Kabukçu (Liverpool), who will speak on "Agricultural Origins and Culinary Cultures in Aceramic Neolithic Southeast Anatolia: Recent Archaeobotanical Evidence from the Taş Tepeler Project".
Pre-Pottery Neolithic sites in Southeast Anatolia have produced tantalising evidence for the development of sedentism, agriculture, and plant and animal domestication. Our recent work at Karahantepe and in the broader Taş Tepeler Project are now providing new insights into plant use practices and the likely role of culinary traditions centring on the use of a diverse range of wild grasses and legumes during the transition to farming in this region. While still preliminary in nature, initial results are built on a foundation of systematic and rigorous sampling for bioarchaeological remains on-site.
A further focus will highlight how new excavations and archaeobotanical research in the region continues on the research traditions at sites such as Çayönü and Nevali Çori, which not only provided evidence for early cultivation and domestication during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic, but were also methodologically pioneering projects in which rigorous sampling was applied for the retrieval and study of archaeobotanical remains in the second half of the 20th century.
