Die Römisch-Germanische Kommission des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts und ihr Förderverein Freunde der Archäologie in Europa e. V. laden herzlich zum kommenden Abendvortrag am 

Montag, 31. März 2025, 18 Uhr c. t.  ein.

Vortragen wird Prof. Dr. Richard Hoffmann (York University, Toronto, Canada) zum Thema

"Common carp, the Colonizer of medieval Europe and the modern world".

 

Combining palaeogentics, archaeozoology, historical records, and aquatic ecology allows us to recreate the diffusion of a freshwater fish from the Balkans across medieval Europe and its modern spread around the world. Both purposeful and unintended human actions gave carp access to artificial environments tailored to its needs and to natural waters susceptible to invasive colonization. What medieval and modern people thought to provide human food came to be seen as destructive to native ecosystems and fish species. Most recently the carp has even been turned into an object of human sport.
