Entangled Africa (DFG-SPP 2143)
The DFG Priority Program "Entangled Africa: Inner African Relations between the Rainforest and the Mediterranean, ca. 6000 - 500 Years BP" (SPP 2143) was established by the Senate of the German Research Foundation (DFG) in April 2017 for a period of six years. In winter 2018, the first research projects started their work.
The focus is on the study of archaeology and environmental history, of the development and dissemination of technologies and objects, of connections between groups of people, and of human interaction with climatic zones and natural habitats of Africa from an African perspective. Cross-project working groups create the methodological framework for discussing the available material and address common research interests. Underlying all is the hypothesis that intra-African relations have had a greater impact on the development of human societies of northern hemispheric Africa than previously thought.
The researchers' working areas range from the Horn of Africa to the west coast of the continent, from the rainforests of the Congo and the Ethiopian highlands to the southern edge of the Sahara and the Tibesti in northern Chad. Research is conducted in close collaboration with colleagues from African partner countries.
