A workshop and kiln district at the Orkhon terrace near to Kharhorin

In addition to the ongoing investigations in the old Mongolian capital Karakorum, a kiln and workshop district close to the urban area was objective of the archaeological studies of the Mongolian-German Orchon-Expedition in 2008 and 2009. The results underline the city’s significance as imperial manufacturing place.

Überblick

In context of the Mongolian-German Orchon-Expedition (MONDOrEx), the find spot of a number of clay figures could be investigated by archaeological excavations, starting in 2007 with some test pits. The site is located on the right bank of the Orkhon River, about 3 kilometres west to the modern city Kharhorin.

The archaeological record already reveals evidence of a number of kilns, however during the following excavation campaign in 2009, these record proved to be a larger workshop and kiln district with a total area of 760 square metres. A number of 14 kilns could be uncovered.

Judging from the findings, the production did not only contain bricks and roof tiles, but also architectural decoration and clay figurines similar to different types of Galbinga – a mythological hybrid being, half woman, half bird.

Numerous findings from the northern city of Karakorum and the Great Hall can be identified as being produced in these workshops. According to this evidence it is to be assumed that the kiln site was part of the imperial manufacturing city Karakorum.

Concerning the research objectives, the site underlines the need to investigate not only the walled urban area, but also the hinterland of the city where institutions like the workshops could be placed.

The archaeological investigation of the kiln site was finished in summer 2009.
