The German Archaeological Institute is headed by its President who is the institute's external representative and who coordinates its cultural policy with Germany's Federal Foreign Office. The President is represented by the Secretary General and together with the senior directors of the departments and commissions, he/she is member of the DAI's Board of Directors (Direktorium). The President also chairs the General Assembly, convened by the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee (Zentraldirektion).
The DAI's current President since 2011 is Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Friederike Fless.
