Since 1829, corresponding and full members of the DAI have been elected and honoured as special cooperation partners and outstanding scholars in the DAI's field of work. The basic idea of a worldwide network of scholars mutually exchanging information was already guiding the founding of the "Instituto di corrispondenza archeologica" and remains so today. In 2022 the Institute had 2259 members worldwide.
