KulturGutRetter | Operations und Logistics

Good operational planning and logistics are crucial for rapid and efficient protection of cultural heritage in crises. Experts from the German Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) work with the DAI to develop the KGR mechanism and concepts for logistics, management, personnel and coordination to protect heritage in crises worldwide.

Überblick

Together with the DAI, the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW) contributes to the development of the mechanism up to its operational application and organisational implementation and develops concepts for coordination, command, personnel and logistics. The logistics enable the rapid transport of staff and volunteers as well as materials of the Cultural Heritage Response Unit (CHRU) to the site of the disaster. The team also takes care of the on-site infrastructure such as tents, electricity, lighting, internet and water. The devices and equipment , such as the mobile  emergency conservation laboratory, are designed for fast transport and can be loaded by air freight thanks to the logistics. The THW can rely on its experience with existing THW units abroad. More than 80,000 THW volunteers in 668 local organisations are involved in disaster relief at home and abroad. The 'Operations and Logistics' team networks, synchronises and integrates the expertise of various structures and institutions at national and international level.

The expertise of the 'Operations and Logistics' sub-project has already been used in 2022 to set up a logistics network for the transport of aid for cultural preservation in Ukraine. Following an international request for assistance from the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), the KulturGutRetter, together with other partners, initiated the logistics network and sent a total of 74 tonnes of relief supplies to museums, archives, collections and other cultural sites and institutions in Ukraine in 2022/23.
