The workshop and kiln district is located on the right bank terrace of the Orkhon River, about 3 km west of the former residential town of Karakorum.
Time
With the fortification of Karakorum from 1235 by Ögedei Khan, the central garrison of the late nomadic steppe horsemen, which according to legend was founded under Genghis Khan, developed into a cosmopolitan residential city. Not only Mongolian craftsmen, but also artists of Chinese and French origin, among others, shaped the appearance of the city with their works. The political-administrative and religious importance of Karakorum was complemented by the production and trade of luxury goods and commodities. It was in this context that the kilns and workshops at Orkhon were discovered, where craftsmen produced building ornaments and other pottery for the needs of the city and the exchange of goods.
