German Archaeological Institute Cairo at "Germany @ Azhar Park" event, 1.11.2014
Our workshops and information address children as well as adults and range from archaeological topics from the Pharaonic period until the Islamic Middle Ages in Egypt:
The labyrinth (12-6 p.m.)
Discover the history of Old-Kairo when you walk through the streets and alleys. Travel through time and you will learn something about the architecture and writing of passed eras.
Feel like a student in pharaonic times and learn to write your name in one of the Egyptian languages. Would you prefer hieroglyphs, coptic or maybe arabic calligraphy? Make your choice out of nearly 5,000 years writing and language history.
Connect the dots (12-6 p.m.)
So many dots on the paper! See what comes from them when you connect them: a picture from pharaonic, early Christian or early islamic times?
Pottery Workshop (12-4 p.m.)
Oh dear, Ahmes-anch dropped his load of pottery vessels! Help us to slot together all the pottery shards and reconstruct your own keepsake. The decorations of the vessel will help you!
Surveying (12-6 p.m.)
Assume the role of an archaeologist and help us to measure the height of structures. Archaeological equipment will support this process and make you feel as if you were on an excavation.
Epigraphy (12-2 and 4-6 p.m.)
Egyptologists have found a new inscription which has not yet been processed. Help us to record this new discovery and you will learn many things about epigraphic work.
Architecture (12-6 p.m.)
Archaeologists made an error in their calculations for the reconstruction of the famous minaret of Ibn Tulun mosc and the project collapsed. Now it´s your turn to rebuild it!
Stratigraphy and Archaeologicals Stories (12-4 p.m.)
Our Rais Mohamed will tell stories about his experience working in archaeological fieldwork in Dahshur! Listen to his tales, learn about archaeological fieldwork, dangers and happy moments!
