Study and Contact Tour 2023

The study and contact tour, organised annually by the DAI Cairo, took place from 16–25 July 2023. This year's participants from the fields of Egyptology, Islamic Archaeology, Restoration Science and Museology awaited an exciting journey through Germany, from Berlin to Munich.
In Berlin, the participants were able to visit the Pergamon Museum before its long closure. Furthermore, several Egyptological institutions such as the Ancient Egyptian Dictionary project and the Egyptological Seminar of the Freie Universität Berlin, but also the restoration labs of the Archaeological Centre and the Neues Museum, gave an insight into their work.
The trip also took the Egyptian colleagues to the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Hildesheim. In Leipzig, the group was warmly welcomed by the colleagues of the Egyptian Museum – Georg Steindorff, the Egyptological Institute of the University of Leipzig and the Bibliotheca Albertina.
The last stop took the participants to Munich, where they not only admired Bavarian baroque palace architecture, but also had an exclusive guided tour of the State Museum of Egyptian Art on its closing day and were able to look behind the scenes. A networking event with colleagues from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich rounded off the trip.
It is thanks to the great hospitality of the German institutions that the scholarship holders were able to gain such an exciting insight into the museum landscape and Egyptology in Germany. Additionally, each participant was able to draw great benefit for his/her academic project.
